Churchill County Reopens Historic Cottage Schools as New Home for CARE After‑School Program

In a promising blend of historic preservation and community support, Churchill County has revamped the beloved Cottage Schools to house its CARE after‑school program, offering expanded services to local students and their families.

Originally constructed in the early 20th century and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007, the iconic Cottage Schools have served multiple educational purposes over the decades. Today, the site at 255 E. Stillwater Avenue hosts the county’s Parks and Recreation Department’s CARE after‑school program, which has moved from its previous location at the fairgrounds.

The newly restored facility enables CARE—and the related SUMFUN summer day camp—to almost double capacity, providing children with homework help, tutoring, recreational activities, and structured enrichment opportunities in a safe environment. Daily shuttle service transports kids from school sites to the program, followed by fun activities like swimming at the Churchill County Aquatic Center.

In addition to educational programming, the renovated Cottage Schools benefit from thoughtful community enhancements, including a shaded playground structure donated by The Rotary Club and new grant-funded playground equipment. The initiative emphasizes community involvement and aims to address the diverse needs of families, helping to create a supportive network within the community.
